Objectives

The National Institute of Science and Technology Policy (NISTEP) was established in July 1988 as a core research institute in Japan.

The environment surrounding NISTEP has changed drastically over its 20-year history. Today, the world faces a number of intractable global problems, including global warming. The public now expects that science and technology will be utilized to help cope with these problems.

Under the circumstances, policy makers are required to create policies based on data and evidence. The need for "science-based science policies" is now recognized throughout the world including Japan. NISTEP plays an important role in that effort.

Our recognition of the vital importance of international relations motivated us to organize this international gathering. We believe the symposium will be both productive and meaningful, not only for the audience, but also for the speakers themselves and NISTEP as an organization. We hope it will function as a springboard for NISTEP as we move toward a brighter future.
